Early Learning

Edmonton Catholic Schools is proud of the quality Early Learning Programs we provide for children in their first school experiences. We welcome the opportunity to be partners with you in your child's education, as we acknowledge that you are your child's first educator. Together we strive to create a love of life long learning within a Catholic Educational Community.

Who is eligible
To be eligible for kindergarten your child must be five years old on or before March 1 of the school year that they would be starting Kindergarten.

How to register
To register your child for Kindergarten, start by visiting the Catholic Elementary School in your neighborhood. The dates for open houses are listed on the website when available and in this guide . You are invited to attend.

Programming Options
In selected sites, Edmonton Catholic Schools offers a variety of program options for you child, including:

  • International Baccalaureate Program
  • French Immersion
  • Ukrainian Bilingual Program
  • Polish Bilingual
  • Spanish Bilingual
  • Cree Bilingual
  • Cree Language & Culture
  • Italian Language & Culture
  • Full Day Kindergarten*
*This program provides children with an extended regular kindergarten program involving more hands-on literacy and social experiences.

Documentation
You will be asked to provide proof of your child's name, date of birth, and citizenship. Only the following documents verifying birth are accepted:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Canadian Citizenship Certificate
  • Passport
  • Record of Landing
  • Baptismal Certificate
  • Court Order

What should I tell the teacher about my child?
The kindergarten teacher and the school will want to know as much information as possible. Some guidelines that might help the teacher get to know your child better include:

  • Has your child been in preschool or daycare or will this be his/her first experience away from mom?
  • What are your child's special passions or interests?
  • What are your child's special needs? (This includes everything from allergies to fears, unique physical or medical conditions, emotional or behavioral patterns, or any major change that might be occurring in your child's life)

What will my child learn in kindergarten?
Edmonton Catholic Schools follow the Kindergarten Program Statement established by Alberta Education. The kindergarten Program Statement provides learner expectations in several learning areas:

Students with special needs
Specialized services are available to children with developmental delays enrolled in the kindergarten program through a multidisciplinary team.

Program focus on supporting children with developmental delays who are enrolled in Kindergarten Programs within their community program

What services are available
Depending on the needs of the individual child. Your child will be supported by a multidisciplinary team of professionals who will provide support to children.
