District Bursaries, Scholarships, Awards and Trust Funds

Applications for any of the scholarships must be from students who are currently graduating from the District in the year of their application.

Al Hamilton Scholarship

Amount: $2,000 per year for up to four years of post-secondary education
Number: Two (one male, one female)

“Committed to the development of today’s young athletes through athletic, academic and financial support”

Description:
Edmonton Oilers AlumniWe are providing every high school in Edmonton the opportunity to recommend one (1) male and one (1) female grade twelve student athlete, for consideration of an Al Hamilton Scholarship Award. For the fifth straight year, the Edmonton Oilers Alumni will be offering two separate scholarships, each for $2,000 per year for a maximum of four years of post secondary education.

The selection of the most deserving recipients will be based on their athletic and academic excellence, school activities, community involvement, leadership qualities and financial need. The individual chosen will exemplify those characteristics of an ideal student athlete.

We ask that if you feel you have a student athlete of this caliber that you sit with them and ask him or her to fill in the required information in the Application Form. We also ask that you, as a coach and/or instructor, write a brief letter highlighting the important qualities of the candidate. Any additional letters of recommendation are welcome.

The cut off date for submissions is TBA. The recipients of the scholarships will be announced TBA.

Anne Anderson Scholarship

Amount: Variable

Description:
Aboriginal Learning ServicesThe Anne Anderson Scholarship has been awarded to Aboriginal students in the Edmonton Catholic School District since 1979. Dr. Anne Anderson had a pioneering role in Cree language instruction. Aboriginal Learning Services is honoured to present this award to Aboriginal students in our school district in Dr. Anne Anderson’s name.

Award:
This award is monetary and the amount and number of awards given are variable. Successful applicants will be notified and receive their award before the end of the school year.

Criteria:
Aboriginal students in Junior High and High School can be recommended for this award by school sponsorship. The award is given based on achievement in at least two of the following areas:

  • Academics
  • Leadership
  • Improvement
  • Community involvement
  • Aboriginal language and culture

  • Student letter describing their achievement and the impact it has made on them as an individual.

Braided Journeys/Canadian Heritage Athlete Development Award

Amount: Five awards of $200.00

Description:
Aboriginal Learning ServicesBraided Journeys Program in partnership with Canadian Heritage is offering the Athlete Development Award to assist individual athletes to achieve a high level in their sport. This award will be given to athletes attending Edmonton Catholic Schools for further training and skills development at local summer sports camps. The award is for both junior high an high school level athletes who competed on a school sports team in the 2009-2010 school year.

  • Five awards of $200.00 will be given in June 2010
  • Preference will be given to students of Aboriginal Ancestry (First Nations, Métis, Inuit)

Frank Schneider Educational Trust Fund

Amount: $500 Minimum

Description:
It is intended to assist the eligible children of District employees.

Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible, the applicant must:

  • Be a graduate of the District
  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary program with the intention of entering the field of education
  • Indicate a need for financial assistance

Application:
Submissions must be received by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Planning & Administrative Services, Catholic Education Services, 9807 - 106 Street, Edmonton AB, T5K 1C2, by TBA. The submission will include:

  • A letter of interest and a completed application form
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Documentation to indicate the criteria have been met

Geraldine MacIntosh Memorial Bursary

Amount: $500 Minimum

Description:
The award is to be presented annually to an English as a Second Language (ESL) student who is graduating from Grade 12 and entering any post-secondary institution the following academic year.

Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible, the applicant must -

  • Be a graduate of the District
  • Have an academic average sufficient to gain entrance to a post-secondary institution
  • Be a well-rounded student who is presently taking, or has taken, an active role in school community activities
  • Show financial need
  • Have landed immigrant status
  • Have received ESL assistance at any point in their education with the District

Application:
Submissions must be received by the Director of Educational Planning & Administrative Services, Catholic Education Services, 9807 - 106 Street, Edmonton AB, T5K 1C2, by TBA. The submission will include:

  • A short essay (maximum of 400 words) briefly describing:
    • Future goals
    • The impact the ESL program has had or will have in helping the student achieve his/her educational goals
    • Financial need
    • Community involvement
  • Documentation to indicate that the student has met the criteria indicated
  • Three letters of recommendation

Selection:
The recipient will be selected from the qualified applicants by a committee comprising representation from the District.

Presentation:
The award will be presented at the annual Awards ceremony of the recipient.

Italian Women's Society Academic Scholarship

Amount: $500

Description:
Applicant must be of Italian background (one or both parents of Italian heritage - natural or legal, or one of the grandparents of Italian heritage).

Criteria (Eligibility):

  • Applicant must be of Italian heritage (one or both parents of Italian origin - natural or legal, or one of his/her grandparents of Italian origin)
  • Applicant should be enrolled in their final year at a District high school and must have maintained an "honours" standing (80%+) in academic subjects throughout their high school career.
  • Applicant should possess leadership qualities and demonstrate a willingness to serve (e.g. community.)
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a post-secondary (university) institution at the time the award is given.

John and Vera Dunnigan Physical Education Scholarship

Amount: $500 Minimum

Description:
This scholarship shall recognize and honor a student graduate of the District who is studying Physical Education for the purpose of teaching.

Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible the applicant must -

  1. be a graduate of the District
  2. be enrolled at a post secondary program with the intention of teaching Physical Education
  3. indicate a need for financial assistance

Application:
Submissions will be received by the department of Educational Planning & Administrative Services, Catholic Education Services, 9807 - 106 Street, Edmonton AB, T5K 1C2, by June 15, 2009. Submissions should include:

  1. a letter of interest and a completed application form
  2. letters of support from administrators or teachers
  3. documentation to indicate compliance with criteria 1 & 2 as stated above

John Bright Memorial Award

Amount: $1500 to the top male and female student
  $750 runner-up to four other finalists

Description:
Edmonton Journal LogoJohn Bright's number 24 hangs on the Wall of Honour at Commonwealth Stadium, paying tribute to a man who played for the Edmonton Eskimo Football club from 1954 to 1964. John Bright was a great football player - he was also a great teacher, coach, school administrator, and ideal citizen of the City of Edmonton. The Edmonton Journal first presented the John Bright Memorial Award in 1984 to recognize exceptional high school students who excelled in three integral areas of John Bright's life: academics, athletics, and citizenship.

The John Bright Memorial Award is presented annually to a high school female and male student who are outstanding in each of the following THREE areas during their senior high school years. This memorial award will be presented for the TWENTY-SEVENTH time at the finish of the 2009-2010 school term.

Academic
The nominee will:

  1. Be a first year grade twelve student who is graduating.
  2. Have demonstrated regular attendance at classes, and the maintenance of a sound academic standing. (A copy of the latest report card marks is necessary.)

Volunteer
The nominee will have demonstrated leadership ability by volunteering for activities such as:

  1. Youth service clubs
  2. Student union
  3. Athletic board
  4. Graduation council
  5. Community activities
  6. Other

Athletic
The nominee will have demonstrated ability in at least ONE inter-school sport and will have:

  1. Made a serious commitment to the team and its members.
  2. Exemplified a positive attitude and willingness to co-operate with all coaching and teaching staff, students, opponents, officials and team-mates.
  3. At all times exhibited a high standard of self-control and discipline as well as a desire to strive for excellence.

Rules of Nomination and Pertinent Information:

  • There is no limit to the number of nominees that may come from any one school.
  • All submissions MUST be typed.
  • Submissions will only be accepted from school principal, school staff or support staff.
  • Nomination form, duly completed and signed, must accompany nomination submission.
  • Enclosures of Importance:
    1. A copy of latest report card marks
    2. Cummary of student’s achievements and activities in each category
    3. One supporting letter in each category (Academic, Citizenship, Athletics)
    4. A letter from the nominees outlining what they consider to be their single most important achievement.
  • All submissions will be screened and a short list compiled. Those on the short list will be interviewed before the final selection is made.
  • The selection committee consists of a minimum of four active members from the education community and one or more representatives from the Edmonton Journal.
  • The John Bright Memorial Award will be presented jointly to the female and male students in the capital region, with each school represented holding the trophy for a six month term.
  • The two winning nominees will each receive a bursary and a permanent trophy. In addition there will be four consolation awards.
  • The decision of the selection committee will be final and no appeals will be heard.

Kay Krausert Award Fund

Amount: $500 Minimum

Description:
The fund was established to provide a yearly scholarship to a District Grade 12 business education student for further education at a recognized post-secondary education institution.

Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible, students must:

  • Graduate from a District high school
  • Have majored in business education (CTS) with successful completion of three grade 12 courses in the business/information processing components of CTS
  • Demonstrate a strong service commitment while attending senior high school
  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary institution for further education in the area of business

Application:

Pura Scholarship

Amount: Interest realized each year from the principal investment.

Description:
This scholarship is to recognize a grade 12 graduate of ECSD who will be entering a university, college or post secondary technical institute, pursuing studies in an area of practical arts:

  • Business Education
  • Home Economics
  • Industrial arts
  • Vocational Education
  • Any Technical Field

Criteria (Eligibility):
To be eligible, the applicant must:

  • be a graduate of Edmonton Catholic Schools
  • be enrolled in a post-secondary program, pursuing studies in an area of practical arts

Application:
Submissions will be received by TBA. Submissions should include:

  • Name, Address, Telephone number, Date of Birth
  • High school(s) attended, work experience, interests and activities
  • Record of grade 12 marks
  • Proof of registration at a post-secondary educational institution and area of study

Selection:
The selection and scholarship administrative committee shall select the recipient from among the applicants.

The successful applicant well be notified by letter and requested to notify of the intent to be present to receive the scholarship.

Presentation:
Awarded annually at the recipient's school graduation ceremony/awards day.

Robert Steele Bursary

Amount: Five bursaries of $500.00

Description:
Aboriginal Learning Services Aboriginal Learning Services is offering the Sixth Annual Robert Steele Bursary. This bursary will be awarded to five Aboriginal High School students graduating from the Edmonton Catholic School District in 2009. In recognition of Robert Steele’s outstanding contributions to Aboriginal student success, this award was created exclusively for students who are successful in completing high school while at the same time encouraging them to further their education.

Five bursaries of $500.00 will be awarded on TBA at the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Grad Luncheon.

Criteria:
Must be graduating in 2009 and attending post-secondary within the next six months.
