SCIENCE 14 COURSE OUTLINE

Program Overview

Science 14 is an introductory science  course worth 5 credits towards your high school diploma. Since a total of 10 credits in science is required to graduate, most students continue to Science 24 once they have completed this course. Science 14 will help you learn to appreciate science in your day to day life, while also helping you to make smarter and better decisions in things related to science.

In Science 14-24, students learn science in relevant contexts and engage in meaningful activities. This facilitates the transfer of knowledge to new contexts. Students are encouraged to participate in lifelong learning in science and to appreciate science as a remarkable, inspiring and stimulating human enterprise with practical impact on their lives and society as a whole. The course includes topics from biology, chemistry, applied physics and other disciplines such as the earth sciences, meteorology, or astronomy.

There is no text book for this course. The notes that you will find in the "Class Notes" section of each unit are complete and have all the information you need to successfully complete the course.

This course is divided into four units of study:

  • Unit 1: Investigating Properties of Matter
  • Unit 2: Energy Transfer Technologies
  • Unit 3: From Life to Lifestyle
  • Unit 4: Matter and Energy in the Biosphere

In all there are 60 lessons, divided into the four units that compose this course. As you read through the lessons you will find self-check questions so that you can test your understanding of what you've just learned.

At the end of most lessons you will find a link to an assignment. Download the assignment, complete it, and save it. Submit your completed assignment to the "Assignment Dropbox" for marking. You will need to complete four assignments a week; please see the assignment section for due dates.

At the end of each section (which is usually about 3 or 4 lessons) you will complete a quiz to test your understanding of all the concepts. These quizzes are done online on the honour system. You can not use any form of notes or books while doing the quizzes.

You will also be writing a midterm and final exam in person.
