Program Overview
In this program, the students are encouraged to be full and active
participants in the making of "history" or if you will,
"culture." Actually, one does not have a choice. Like it
or not, by being alive, one involuntarily participates in the events
of daily life. It is in these ordinary life events, that the program
Christ and Culture will lead us to the realization that God is constantly
inviting us to enter into conversation with Him. Through our interactions
with one another, through the daily cultural events of life and most
of all, through the Gospel, it is hoped that as Catholics, you will
have some influence in shaping culture. The program then has three
key elements (Christ and Culture, teacher's manual, 2001):
- The human being: the student who enters into the dialogue
- Culture and the things that shape culture in Canada
- The person of Christ as he is present and active among us and
in us today in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Program aim: to assist young persons, with the help of the gospel,
to participate as Catholics in the shaping of our culture (Christ
and Culture, 2001).
Core Content: There are a total of nine units in Christ and Culture.
For brevity, the lessons in Christ and Culture may be grouped into
the following core themes:
- Profession of faith - young people are expected
to express their faith in words or in a language that is universal
to all believers in the world and throughout the centuries.
- Community - All believers express their faith
in God through relationships with others and in the daily events
of life. "This communal relationship is at the heart of the
Church's life and teaching" (Christ and Culture, 2001).
- Morality - The young person then must learn to
make sound moral choices and judgments in a society wrought with
endless alternatives. In private and or in public life, Christ and
Culture intends to lead the young person to a path consistent with
the Gospel values in a modern world.
- Prayer life - Young people learn to nourish their
faith by actively keeping in touch with an ever present God.
