International Baccalaureate Programme

IB ProgrammesEdmonton Catholic Schools is the first district in Canada to offer all three International Baccalaureate Programmes including:

  • Primary Years Programme: Grades K to 6
  • Middle Years Programme: Grades 7 to 10
  • Diploma Programme: Grades 11 and 12

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years & Middle Years Programmes are for all students.

The programmes cultivate intercultural awareness, holistic knowledge and communication skills within a dimension of Catholic education. The IB Programmes focuses on the development of the whole child while meeting children's academic, social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs.

They offer a comprehensive and balanced curricula that dovetails with the Alberta Education curriculum. IB students become critical and compassionate thinkers, informed participants in our global community, and responsible citizens.

Edmonton Catholic Schools is proud to offer these International Baccalaureate Programmes that have been officially authorized by the IBO:

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The primary years program is designed for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. It engages students in a uniquely international program focused on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds. It embraces a structured in-depth inquiry into curriculum that complements the Alberta Learning Program of Studies.

Middle Years Programme (MYP)

The middle years program provides a framework of academic challenge and life skills for students aged 11-16 (grades 7-10). This four year program begins in Junior High and culminates in grade 10 in High School. The MYP has three fundamental concepts developing holistic learning, intercultural awareness and communication.

Diploma Programme (DP)

The diploma program is a two year program beginning in grade 11. It is a comprehensive international program designed for highly motivated students. It offers a rigorous preparation for post-secondary education. The emphasis is placed on critical thinking, intercultural understanding and exposure to various points of view.
