What is Full Immersion?
- Full Immersion is the high school equivalent of Early Immersion.
- Full immersion is any senior high school program offering 50% to 75% of the program in French.
Who should register?
- Any student having completed grade 9 in either Early.
Which schools offer it?
How does it work?
- As with the Early Immersion program students focus on French language skills in the French Language Arts class and increase exposure to vocabulary by studying most other courses in French.
Popular concerns
Q: Will my child find math or science difficult in French?
- A: Difficult concepts require the same effort to acquire whether in French or in English. Once the concept is mastered it is then labeled in the memory, for example, 'Division' or 'La division'
Q: Will my child fall behind in the sciences at university if they are studied in French in high school?
- No. French Immersion graduates report a very short period of adjustment at the university level in terms of vocabulary. Concepts themselves are the same in either language.
Benefits
- The greatest advantage to a full immersion program is the level of fluency attained in both French and English.
- The more subject areas students have been exposed to in French the broader the scope of topics the students
will feel comfortable discussing in French.
