Parents and Students

Edmonton Catholic School District parents are an integral part of our school community. Edmonton Catholic School staff, in partnership with parents, are committed to the education of our students. Parents are welcome and encouraged to participate in all areas of their child's education, as they are their child's first and most important teachers.

Statement of Belief - School Fundraising Through Gambling Activities

January 17,2011

The Board of Trustees of Edmonton Catholic Schools recognizes the teaching authority of our respective presiding Bishops, Archbishop Smith and Bishop Motiuk, and fully supports the principles underlying the archdiocesan policy on gambling. The Board believes that the issue of schools fundraising through gambling activities or any other activities is not solely a Catholic education issue; rather, it is fundamentally a social justice issue and an issue relating to the province's responsibility to provide adequate and sustainable funding for all aspects of public education.

The Board expresses the view that no school or school community in Alberta should have to raise money through gambling activities in order to meet children's educational needs. Further, the Board does not see this type of fundraising as meaningful engagement in children's education.

The Board recognizes that in order to effect and embrace change, sufficient time and substantial alternatives are required.

Information to Parents and Guardians Regarding the Permeation of the Catholic Faith

As a result of Bill 44, The Alberta Human Rights Act requires all schools in the province of Alberta to give notice to a parent or guardian when courses of study, educational programs, institutional materials, instruction or exercises include subject matter that deals primarily and explicitly with religion.

The essential purpose of Edmonton Catholic Schools is to fully permeate Catholic theology, philosophy, practices and beliefs, the principles of the Gospel and teachings of the Catholic Church, in all aspects of school life, including in the curriculum of every subject taught, both in and outside of formal religion classes, celebrations and exercises. Every course of study and education program, all institutional materials, instruction and exercises will at all times include subject matter that deals primarily and explicitly with religion.
